PM promises COP26 conference that Thailand will step up fight against climate change

Date:

GLASGOW (NNT) – Thailand’s prime minister attended the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, the United Kingdom where he announced Thailand’s intention to step up its efforts to combat climate change.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha said at the conference that Thailand gives utmost importance to climate change and is ready to cooperate with the global community to achieve climate goals. He explained that Thailand emits 0.72% of global greenhouse gas emissions but is among the 10 countries that are most affected by climate change. Because of this, Thailand was among the first group of nations to commit to the Paris Agreement.

Currently, the target is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero within 2065 and achieve carbon neutrality within 2050. However, the prime minister said Thailand may be able to step up its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with support from international cooperation frameworks, and doing so would allow the country to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Gen. Prayut took the opportunity to describe Thailand’s hosting of the APEC Summit in 2022, saying the agenda at the meeting will be bio-circular-green (BCG) economy.

At the COP26 dinner reception, the prime minister spoke with various leaders, including those of the United Kingdom, India, South Korea, and Canada. He also spoke to US President Joe Biden to inquire about the Covid situation in the United States and to invite the president to the 2022 APEC Summit in Thailand.
