The MEG 2 production moving to Phuket from Krabi

Date:

The selection of a shooting location for The Meg 2: The Trench will probably be settled in Phuket after a disagreement against Krabi Declaration, disappointing local residents as they were looking forward to tremendous job opportunities from the movie production.

The production was scheduled to kick off from April 6 to May 9, 2022, at Pranang Beach, Tonsai Beach, and Railay Bay in Krabi. The mega project would have involved the construction of a temporary resort near The Shell Sea Beach Resort, a helicopter landing on Tonsai Beach, and jetski riding in the water. It was expected that numerous employment opportunities and economic activities were to take place; however, The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council raised the violation of Krabi Declaration against the production regarding water activities, closure of a tourist attraction, and the rights of hotel entrepreneurs, and Thai and foreign tourists, which would extend the approval process that could affect the commencement of the production.

Krabi Declaration states that jetskiing is not allowed in any Krabi waters, and the compensation for the affected parties by the closure of Railay Bay must be done. That means if the movie producer insists on using Krabi as the shooting location, all jetskiing-involving scenes must be removed. Moreover, the compensations to be paid to Railay Bay’s business owners and island-tour agencies must be completed. As a result, Indochina Productions (Siam), a production coordinator on behalf of Deep Blue Production under Warner Brothers, is now approaching Phuket and in the middle of requesting approval from the local authorities.

The Meg 2: The Trench is a science fiction action film, loosely based on the 1999 book The Trench by Steve Alten. It is served as a sequel to the 2018 film. The movie features an attack on a deep-sea submersible by a massive creature, trapping it at the bottom of the Pacific.
