During this long vacation period, Phuket sees its tourism revitalized thanks to the Songkran festival and local tourism.
The Southern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association (THA SC) reports that 18,000 visitors arrive every day at Phuket International Airport. Compared to the Thai New Year period, this represents a 30% increase in tourism. This growth is mainly due to local travelers.
Indeed, according to Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, president of the THA SC, visitors are mainly domestic tourists, this would be due to the government’s tourism subsidy program “We Travel Together” (Rao Tiew Duay Kan). As a reminder, this program aims to promote local tourism, offering among other things a 40% discount on the price of hotel rooms to subscribers. ฿9bn had been injected into this project.
Although the number of tourists is expected to drop after the Songkran festival, the province will still remain a destination for international tourists. Hopefully, Phuket will see a rise in tourism with the resumption of the summer season.
