The Department of Public Health promised to remove cannabis and hemp from the Class 5 narcotics list next month.
The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement, according to Dr. Withid Sariddeechaikool, deputy secretary general, will take effect on June 9, allowing the general public to freely grow these plants for private use. He did, however, warn that extracts containing more than 0.2 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) would still be classified as a Class 5 substance and would be subject to drug control and suppression laws.
Those who want to grow cannabis or hemp must register through the FDA’s “Puk Kan” mobile app, and those who want to grow the plants for commercial purposes must notify authorities.
After June 9, cannabis seeds and other plant parts will be allowed and regulated in the same way as other plant seeds, according to Withid.
Depending on the type of product, narcotic goods are regulate differently. To accommodate business owners who want to import cannabis extracts, the FDA is also working to change other laws to allow and regulate other herbal products that contain cannabis or hemp extracts. Commercial plants must be reported to authorities.
