After 2024, Russia will depart the International Space Station

Date:

In order to concentrate on developing its own space station, Russia has said that it will stop participating in the International Space Station program after 2024.

According to NBC News, Russia has declared it would stop participating in a program that served as a symbol of post-Cold War collaboration by leaving the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024.

The action is being taken while tensions between Russia and the West over the conflict in Ukraine are rising.   The future of international cooperation in space is cast in doubt by this.

The head of the Russian space agency reportedly informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia will discontinue participation in the space station program and instead concentrate on developing its own.

According to the Tass news service, “Yuri Borisov” is the Director of the Russian Federal Space Agency. The disengagement, according to Roscosmos, will happen after 2024.

The construction of the low-Earth orbit station began in 1998 and was finished in 2011, and it has been lauded as an example of national reconciliation.

The agreement for the space station expires in 2024, and Russian officials have previously made suggestions that they will let the agreement lapse in order  to begin construction on their own Russian space station, which is scheduled to start using in 2025.

Borisov, who was appointed earlier this month, confirmed his intention to Putin. Russian responsibilities to its allies would be met, according to the statement. prior to finishing the project

He added as well that the  Russian space agency’s major objective is to enhance standards and give the nation access to crucial space services including navigation, communications, and global meteorological data.

He continued, “The space business is facing challenges.”

The Russian declaration came at the time of the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine which is affecting everything from European energy supply to the global food supply.
