The Surat Thani Chumphon Secondary Education Service Area Office has congratulated Mr. Wuttichai Ongratanakul, a grade 5/1 student at Koh Phangan Suksa School, and a girl named Kaya Morrell, a grade 2/2 student there, according to reports from the province of Surat Thani. The students placed second in the ISIPSc 2022, the Ceremony SESERI-UniKL International Science Innovation & Public Speaking Competition in Malaysia.
In this case, Mr. Wuttichai and Ms. Morrell represented the submission of proposals and the presentation of the smart fishing gear for the Dolfus’ octopus. They entered the competition by writing a case study on fisherman on Koh Phangan (specifically, about how to create intelligent squid fishing equipment for Koh Phangan fishermen). The abundance of squid on Koh Phangan inspired this innovation. A large part of  the population works in fishing. The gadget consisted of PVC pipes, 80 centimeters in length, 6 pieces, installed with 1 electrical device per piece. A fishing line with bait on the end is affixed to the end of each tube. Connecting all pipe lengths together and putting a foam board in the middle allowed the pipes to float on water, creating an intelligent squid catch mechanism. The gadget uses a flashing red LED light to alert fisherman when the squid has attached to a fishing line.
According to the news, the experiment showed that squids of varying sizes can be captured. In addition to being a time-saving tool, this innovation eliminates the need for island residents to pull bait for squid behind them on bamboo poles as they travel the shoreline.
