Lopburi’s Annual Monkey Feast Festival

Date:

Lopburi city in Lopburi province hosted the annual Monkey Feast Festival, also known as the Monkey Banquet or Monkey Buffet Festival, on Sunday morning (November 27).

Volunteers across the street from the Phra Prang Sam Yot temple cooked primarily vegetarian meals for the monkeys as monkey sculptures carrying trays queued up in rows outside the temple.

Historically, the province has been represented by the monkey, and many tourists travel there just to see the primates feast on the food left out for them.

The festival’s organizers stressed that it does more than just provide entertainment by drawing tourists to the area.

According to event creator Yongyuth Kitwatanusont, the population of monkeys in Lopburi has increased from 300 to over 4000. In fact, locals refer to Lopburi as “Monkey City.”

The monkeys have reportedly acclimated to city life and no longer fear humans, as seen by their habit of climbing on humans and snatching food and other stuff from unsuspecting tourists.
