Suchart Tancharoen, Deputy House Speaker, has urged the government to accelerate the development of Chiang Rai as a special economic zone (SEZ) in order to keep up with the rapid expansion of the Golden Triangle SEZ in Lao PDR.
Suchart made the comments during a recent trip to Laos to explore business and trade potential in the Golden Triangle area, which includes Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Vilay Lakhamphong, Laos’ Deputy Prime Minister, as well as the managing directors of the Golden Triangle SEZ Council and a slew of other high-ranking officials, were among those in attendance.
Given its geographical advantages, Thailand, according to Suchart, should begin cooperating with its neighbor to remove decades-long illegal activities in the area and develop the Golden Triangle SEZ into a major transportation hub.
Chiang Rai is also contributing to regional growth by building the Thailand-Laos Bridge. The initiative is viewed as a significant step toward boosting Thailand-Laos commercial connections and supporting regional development. It is planned to be finished over the next several years and will function as a significant regional trade and business centre.
The Chiang Rai SEZ, according to officials, will attract major investment, improving the local economy and providing new employment possibilities.
