The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) anticipates that the country’s widest river bridge spanning the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok would be finished by next year.
The eight-lane bridge is expected to be finished this month, according to EXAT. Nevertheless, before it can be formally opened early next year, the bridge will need to undergo inspections and architectural work.
The parallel bridge is part of the Rama III expressway project, which runs 18.7 kilometers from the Bang Khunthian intersection along Rama II Road to the Bang Khlo interchange, linking the Chalerm Maha Nakhon and Si Rat expressways. The project will serve to relieve traffic congestion in the capital and its neighboring provinces in the country’s west and south.
The two-kilometer-long cable-stayed bridge runs parallel to the Rama IX Bridge. The new bridge will help reduce congestion on the other bridge, which will be restored in the near future.
Following the completion of the parallel bridge, EXAT will suspend usage of the Rama IX Bridge in 2025 for a year of repair. Rama IX Bridge now handles 104,000 cars per day on average. Officials have stated that once the Rama III highway project is completed, congestion on the 35-year-old bridge would be lessened.
