Efforts by Several Organizations to Stop Coastal Erosion

Date:

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment have joined forces to combat coastline erosion in the Bang Khun Thian area of the Thai capital.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa and his staff recently visited the region to check out the coastline.

For the time being, the district uses concrete barriers to divide the inland areas from the coastal ones. The ministry claims more checks are necessary to assess the barriers’ efficacy against high waves.

A combination of traditional concrete and bamboo or concrete poles, Minister Varawut proposed, would be placed along the shore to protect the land from waves.

The two organizations collaborated on a survey, and the findings will be used to build a wave break wall along 4.7 kilometers of the coast in the Bang Khun Thian area. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of the Interior have both committed to allocating one billion baht to this cause.
