The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has embarked on an ambitious mission to position 2023 as a pivotal year for Thai tourism, marked by sustainability and the cultivation of a tourism ecosystem tailored to discerning travelers. With an eye towards responsible tourism, the TAT has recently entered into a collaboration agreement with the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) to promote “Net Zero Tourism” and advance sustainable tourism practices.
Governor Yuthasak Supasorn of the TAT emphasized the agency’s role in raising awareness and garnering support for the “Net Zero Tourism” concept through various marketing and promotional activities. This concerted effort aims to foster a deeper understanding and recognition of sustainable tourism among tourists, businesses, and stakeholders both within Thailand and on the international stage.
In line with their collaboration, the TGO will provide academic support and facilitate climate change awareness by organizing joint workshops and seminars with the TAT. These initiatives seek to facilitate the transition from low-carbon tourism to achieving net-zero carbon emissions within the tourism industry.
Additionally, the TGO aims to encourage tourism companies to adopt carbon footprint calculating tools to assess their carbon figures and determine the appropriate carbon offset amounts. Participation in voluntary greenhouse gas emission reduction programs will enable tourism firms to enhance their competitiveness while embracing responsible tourism trends.
The TAT’s commitment to sustainability and the promotion of “Net Zero Tourism” signifies a significant step forward in reshaping Thailand’s tourism landscape. By embracing sustainability, the Thai tourism industry aims to not only attract high-quality tourists but also create a positive impact on the environment and local communities, ensuring a brighter future for tourism in the country.
