Coalition Parties Postpone Government Formation Meeting, Awaiting Election Results Confirmation

Date:

Bangkok, June 20, 2023 – The eight political parties forming the coalition government, led by the Move Forward Party (MFP), have announced the postponement of their crucial meeting. Originally scheduled for June 20, the meeting will now take place on June 22. The decision to delay the gathering stems from the coalition’s desire to await the official confirmation of the May 14 general election results by the Election Commission (EC). The EC is expected to make the long-awaited announcement on June 21, unveiling the confirmed election outcomes for 100 party-list MPs and 400 constituency MPs-elect. However, the 71 cases currently under investigation will not be included in the disclosure.

The MFP headquarters will serve as the venue for the upcoming meeting, during which the formation of the new government will be a central topic of discussion. Additionally, reports from the transition committee, spearheaded by MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat, will be presented. The establishment of this committee aimed to provide updates on the ongoing discussions among coalition parties concerning various issues.

Meanwhile, negotiations between the MFP and Pheu Thai parties regarding the crucial role of the House speaker remain ongoing. It is expected that the allocation of ministerial posts within the cabinet will occur once the voting process to nominate the House speaker and prime minister concludes.

With anticipation mounting, political observers and citizens alike eagerly await the outcome of the EC’s announcement, as it will set the stage for further progress in the formation of Thailand’s new government.
