Thailand’s newly elected lawmakers are set to gather for their inaugural parliamentary session on July 3, as announced in a royal decree published in the official Royal Gazette on Saturday (25 June).
The decree aligns with Section 121 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, which stipulates that a Parliament session must be held within 15 days of the announcement of general election results.
This decree paves the way for the establishment of a new government following the general election held on May 14.
On June 19, the Election Commission officially certified the winners of all 500 seats in the lower house. The lawmakers must convene in early July to elect a speaker and two deputies. Subsequently, the speaker will call for a joint session of parliament, comprising the elected lower house and the appointed senate, to vote on a new prime minister.
Discussions regarding the appointment of the house speaker are expected to take place on July 4.
