Khao Kheow Open Zoo Welcomes Newborn Capybara Cubs

Date:

Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province has exciting news to share. On May 5, 2023, a capybara, the world’s largest rat and rodent resembling a guinea pig, gave birth to three adorable cubs. The cubs are offspring of a two-year-old father named Jiw and a two-year-old mother named Som. The gender of the cubs has yet to be identified as they are still under the care of their natural stepmother. However, they are described as cute, attractive, and in good health.

With the arrival of the new cubs, Khao Kheow Open Zoo now has a total of 14 capybaras, including 10 females and 4 males. Capybaras are known as the largest rodents in the world and are native to America. They have light brown coarse hair, webbed feet for swimming, and do not possess a tail. Capybaras give birth to 2-8 young and can be found in grasslands, rainforests, and near swamps, rivers, and lakes in Central and South America.

The population of capybaras has been declining due to human hunting, leading to increased efforts in conservation. At Khao Kheow Open Zoo, the capybaras are thriving and ready to captivate tourists and children with their cuteness. Visitors can now witness these delightful creatures at the Capybara display at Khao Kheow Open Zoo every day.
