Caretaker Prime Minister Concerned About Potential Protests and Calls for Peaceful Climate

Date:

The Caretaker Prime Minister, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, has expressed his concerns about the upcoming political protests expected to take place in front of the Parliament Complex. The demonstrations, anticipated to draw crowds from both pro and anti-government factions, have raised worries about potential conflict.

Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, stated that Gen Prayut urged officials to ensure smooth management of the gatherings, with a primary focus on preventing any faction from breaching the law and maintaining peace. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of adhering to proper procedures during the protests.

Furthermore, Gen Prayut stressed the need to avoid escalating national tensions, particularly given Thailand’s efforts to achieve stability over the past 8-9 years. He called for a peaceful political climate and encouraged progressive movement in the country.

Regarding the selection of the Prime Minister, which may extend to a third round, the spokesperson clarified that the premier did not express specific concerns and believes that political processes will unfold as per the parliamentary mechanism. In the event the leading party fails to secure a majority, the second or third-ranking parties will be tasked with forming the government.

Gen Prayut also voiced concern over instances of intimidation among citizens, emphasizing that such situations could further divide the nation. He directed relevant agencies to closely monitor and manage these issues, especially those arising from online platforms and social media.

Addressing the senator who became a target of online intimidation, the Prime Minister highlighted the potential for these issues to escalate and lead to more disputes and conflicts. As a response, he has assigned the cabinet and related agencies to address these concerns promptly and take appropriate actions to ensure peace and stability in the country.
