Government’s Cannabis Policy Aims for Health and Economic Growth, Says Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul

Date:

Bangkok, September 14, 2023 – In a recent address, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul shed light on the government’s stance regarding cannabis, emphasizing its role in promoting public health and economic prosperity while dispelling misconceptions about encouraging unregulated recreational use.

Anutin, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, and former public health minister in the previous administration, revealed that his party had previously submitted a bill on cannabis regulation during the previous parliamentary session, but it was ultimately dismissed. Undeterred, he announced the party’s intentions to resubmit the bill to the current parliament with renewed vigor, underscoring the manifold benefits of cannabis in the realms of medicine, health, and economics.

The Interior Minister expressed his concern that the discourse surrounding cannabis legalization has become clouded by debates about its unregulated usage. He called upon all stakeholders to cease the propagation of this misconception and focus on the government’s core objectives.

Under the Ministry of Interior’s purview, a significant policy initiative is the reintroduction of the CEO Governor concept for provincial administration. According to Minister Anutin, this innovative concept positions provincial governors as the chief executive officers of their respective provinces, with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of local administrations and public services.

However, this policy has not been without its share of criticism. The Move Forward Party, in particular, has raised concerns, viewing this move as a step towards centralization rather than decentralization. Minister Anutin responded to these concerns by expressing his willingness to provide a comprehensive explanation of the policy, with the intent of addressing any misunderstandings and ensuring transparency in the government’s approach.

In conclusion, the government’s cannabis policy, as outlined by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, underscores the commitment to harnessing the potential of cannabis for the betterment of public health and the national economy, while simultaneously striving to dispel misconceptions and promote clarity in administrative initiatives.
