Tucked away on Pala-U Road in Hin Lek Fai, Baan Suan Mook Hua Hin Restaurant has quietly been gaining a reputation for its authentic Thai cuisine. Intrigued by the praise from friends, my wife and I, along with another couple, recently decided to venture to this unassuming establishment, anticipating a culinary experience that transcends the ordinary.
A Bilingual Culinary Journey:
The restaurant thoughtfully offers a menu in both English and Thai, providing a warm welcome to locals and foreigners alike. What caught our attention were several seafood dishes featuring the Chef’s signature “tamarind sauce,” rumored to be a culinary masterpiece.
The Symphony of Flavors:
Our culinary journey commenced with a selection of eight dishes, all meant to be shared in true Thai family style. We began with the Fish Cakes (Tawd Mon Pla), a delightfully tender and moist creation that stood out from the typical market offerings. Paired with just the right amount of heat, these fish cakes offered a harmonious blend of flavors.
Another revelation was the Shrimp Curry with Betel Leaf Soup, a tantalizing marriage of heat and sour, introducing us to a new facet of Thai cuisine.
However, the true stars of the evening were the seafood dishes that showcased the famed tamarind sauce. These dishes, served atop flash-fried woon sen noodles, were lightly breaded and deep-fried to a golden perfection, their flavors nothing short of brilliant. The tamarind sauce, in particular, deserves special mention, as it paired flawlessly with the fish and noodles. In fact, it brought to mind the pan-fried lake perch of exceptional quality, a rare find in Thailand.
Our culinary journey continued with remarkable shrimp and seafood entrées. The Pad Krapao Seafood, featuring tender squid, medium shrimp, and succulent white fish in a spicy medley, perfectly captured the essence of Thai cuisine. The Tum Yum Nam Sai, a fish soup, offered a rich and dark broth teeming with large, succulent chunks of fish, an experience akin to a French onion soup.
Finally, the Yam Woon Sen Seafood, abundant with squid, shrimp, and white fish, served with a hint of spice, continued to delight the senses, reflecting the passion and expertise of the kitchen.
Beyond the Gastronomic Delights:
Baan Suan Mook’s menu extends beyond the exceptional dishes we savored that evening. With offerings such as deep-fried whole seabass, deep-fried catfish, a variety of noodle dishes, traditional Isaan favorites, and delectable desserts, there’s an irresistible temptation to return and explore more.
The restaurant’s longevity—ten years in the same location—speaks volumes about the commitment of its owners, the lovely couple Malika and Ittidej. Their chef, Chutinan, a family member, is a culinary maestro. Baan Suan Mook Hua Hin Restaurant sits on Pala-U Road, directly across from the Nong Khon Night Market, set back about 50 meters from the road. It operates six days a week, from 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM, reserving Wednesdays for a well-deserved rest.
Baan Suan Mook Hua Hin Restaurant encapsulates the essence of Thai culinary tradition, offering a subtle immersion into the world of authentic Thai flavors. If you seek a dining experience that goes beyond the ordinary, this hidden gem beckons you with open arms.
