In an endeavor to showcase the rich heritage of Muay Thai on a global stage, the Royal Thai Army is gearing up to host the “Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024” in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Scheduled to unfold from February 4 to 6, this event aligns with Thailand’s ambitious drive to propel Muay Thai onto the international sports scene. Coinciding with activities at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok from February 1 to 5, the festival promises a unique blend of tradition, culture, and athletic prowess.
Collaborating with both public and private sector entities, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and various Muay Thai organizations, the festival is poised to set new benchmarks for the sport’s global recognition and foster sports tourism.
President of Army Television and Radio Station (TV5), Gen Nirandorn Srikacha, emphasized the festival’s focus on promoting the cultural heritage and traditions of Muay Thai. The event will feature a diverse array of activities designed to illuminate the rich history and customs of this ancient martial art. Among the highlights are a royal ceremony honoring the 7 Kings and King Sanphet VIII, a Muay Thai history exhibition, regional Muay Thai activities, and the centerpiece “Muay Thai Roots to Global Arena” boxing event.
As part of the festivities, a “Muay Thai Teacher Consecration Ceremony” will take place, accompanied by demonstrations of traditional Muay Thai postures. An insightful exhibition titled “Marvels of Muay Thai: From the Roots of Siam to the Global Martial Art Heritage” is also on the agenda. The festival will not only entertain with performances enhanced by lights, colors, and sounds, including captivating drone formations, but it will also serve as a platform to promote the Muay Thai industry alongside local products and cuisine from Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
The grand culmination on February 6, celebrated annually as “Muay Thai Day,” holds historical significance. This day marks the coronation anniversary of King Sanphet VIII and pays tribute to his pivotal role in the development and popularization of Thai boxing techniques. From its origins as a martial art employed in warfare and self-defense, Muay Thai has evolved into a globally recognized sport, albeit with some of its original styles fading over time. This festival serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Muay Thai and its journey from the roots of Siam to a revered position in the global martial arts heritage. The “Amazing Muay Thai World Festival 2024” promises to be a spectacular celebration of tradition, culture, and sport, exemplifying Thailand’s commitment to showcasing Muay Thai to the world.
