Spike in Heat-Related Deaths Sparks Concern in Thailand

Date:

In March and April of this year, the toll of heat stroke claimed over 30 lives, marking a concerning surge. Among the victims was a 65-year-old man from Ban Bueng district in Chon Buri, whose demise was attributed to heat stroke.

It was reported that the Disease Control Department observed a spike in heat-related fatalities compared to the same period last year, totaling 37 deaths from March to June. Those most susceptible to heat stroke encompass individuals working outdoors, expectant mothers, children, and elderly individuals with preexisting health conditions.

The department outlined key indicators to recognize heat stroke victims, citing elevated body temperatures surpassing 40°C, accompanied by symptoms like thirst, headaches, nausea, and muscle spasms. Prevention strategies recommended by the department include adequate hydration, wearing protective clothing to shield from sun exposure, and limiting outdoor activities.

In a distressing incident in Village 3 of Nong Sark sub-district, a 65-year-old man was discovered deceased near a convenience store, surrounded by water bottles and food. Witnesses recounted seeing him alive but motionless the day before, eventually succumbing to the scorching temperatures.

Authorities suspect the combination of blazing weather and alcohol consumption may have contributed to his untimely demise. An investigation is underway at the Ban Bueng district hospital to ascertain the precise cause of death.
