At 10:46 p.m. on May 23, 2024, the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Radio Center in Pattaya City received a report of a car accident involving a vehicle hitting an electric pole. The incident occurred inside Soi Wat Bunsamphan 9, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. Following the report, volunteer rescue personnel rushed to the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, responders found a black Suzuki Ciaz sedan, registration number NT 9685, Chonburi, which had lost control and crashed into a high-voltage electric pole, causing significant damage. Inside the car was 27-year-old Jason Oscar Egbe, a resident of Hong Kong. Despite the severity of the crash, he appeared unperturbed, with his pets—a dog and a cat—resting comfortably beside him. Attempts by officials and villagers to wake him were unsuccessful for over 20 minutes, prompting police and rescue workers to physically remove him from the vehicle. Throughout the ordeal, Mr. Egbe remained remarkably calm and even smiled at those assisting him.
Mr. Patiphan Pongruea, 23, a friend of Mr. Egbe, explained that Jason had been smoking marijuana with friends earlier in the evening. After getting intoxicated, he attempted to drive back to his accommodation. Due to his impaired state, he parked his car erratically, blocking local residences. Concerned about the disruption, Mr. Patiphan approached him to address the issue, but Mr. Egbe continued driving, leading to the accident.
Nong Prue Police Station officers detained Mr. Egbe to test his blood alcohol level. Meanwhile, authorities worked quickly to remove the wrecked vehicle from the scene to clear the blocked traffic and restore normal travel conditions for the local residents.
This incident underscores the dangers of driving under the influence and highlights the importance of responsible behavior to ensure public safety.
