2.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Samui Island

Date:

A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck Samui Island on Saturday morning, shaking the resort island but causing no property damage or injuries.

According to the Earthquake Observation Division of the Meteorological Department, the tremor occurred at 8:13 a.m. at a depth of about two kilometers in the Bo Phut sub-district. Residents across the island reported feeling the tremor, with some noting that the roofs of their houses shook slightly, while others heard a rumbling sound. One resident remarked, “Lying down, the roof shook as if a heavy truck was passing quickly.” Another noted, “I didn’t feel shaken like the day before. But there was a loud crash like the last time it happened.”

The Mineral Resources Department classified the event as a micro tremor, attributing it to the movement of cracks in the granite layer. The Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command directed provincial authorities to explain the cause of the quake to residents and provide guidance on safety measures during such incidents.

This tremor follows another earthquake earlier in the week. On Thursday, a 2.4 magnitude quake occurred at a depth of about four kilometers in the Ang Thong sub-district.
