Tourist Police Crack Down on Illegal Foreign Workers in Koh Phangan

Date:

Today, on July 4, 2024, a significant operation unfolded on Koh Phangan, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-am, commander of the Tourist Police. Prompted by complaints from local leaders, authorities cracked down on foreigners suspected of working illegally in various sectors across the island. The coordinated effort involved Pol. Lt. Col. Winij Bunchit of SWAT 5, KG.2, TAT Headquarters, and Mr. Noppadol Khaomali, Koh Phangan District Chief, among others.

Seven individuals were apprehended during the operation. Among them were Mrs. Tay La and Mrs. Sa Mya, both Myanmar nationals running shops selling rice and curry and general goods respectively. Ms. Chanchaemfa, a Thai national, faced charges for allegedly employing foreigners beyond their authorized activities. Additionally, Mrs. Kin Myo Set and Nang Ta Ta Ang were accused of engaging in peddling and operating a water and tea shop without proper permits. Mrs. A. Ang was arrested for managing a betel nut shop unlawfully. Lastly, Mr. Wey Yan Soe, a 19-year-old from Myanmar, was detained for illegal entry into Thailand.

Following their apprehension, all seven suspects were taken to Koh Phangan Police Station for further legal proceedings. Mr. Noppadol Khaomali addressed concerns regarding a viral rumor about a famous barber visiting Koh Phangan, clarifying that investigations confirmed no such individual was present on the island, urging caution in spreading unverified information that could impact tourism.

The operation underscores efforts by authorities to enforce strict regulations on foreign labor in designated tourism zones. TAT Subdistricts 5, 2, and 3 are intensifying efforts to prevent illegal competition against Thai workers and maintain order within the pilot tourism area. This crackdown aims to deter unauthorized employment and uphold the integrity of local labor markets amid ongoing tourism development efforts.
