AirAsia Launches New Bangkok-Kathmandu Route with Promotional Fares

Date:

AirAsia is set to expand its network in South Asia with the introduction of a new route connecting Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport to Kathmandu, Nepal. Beginning on October 2, the airline will operate four weekly flights on this route, utilizing the A320neo aircraft, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

The new service will feature promotional fares starting at 9,990 Nepalese Rupees (approximately 2,600 baht) per trip for bookings made by August 25. Travelers can plan their journeys between October 2 and March 28, 2025, offering ample opportunity to explore Nepal’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

This new route adds to the competitive dynamics on the Bangkok-Kathmandu circuit, where AirAsia joins Thai Lion in servicing Don Mueang Airport. Meanwhile, Thai Airways and Nepal Airlines continue their flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. AirAsia’s introductory roundtrip fares, starting at US$188 (approximately 6,500 baht), are notably lower than those offered by competitors such as THAI and Thai Lion, whose fares range between US$271 and US$337.

AirAsia’s CEO, Santisuk Klongchaiya, highlighted the significance of this route as the airline’s 16th destination in South Asia since resuming operations at near full capacity following the pandemic. He emphasized the region’s potential for growth, particularly in tourism, trade, and business, which has motivated the airline to expand its flight services to meet increasing demand.

Nepal, renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offers travelers a chance to experience the cultural treasures of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, or explore the historical significance of Kathmandu’s Durbar Square. For those seeking spiritual enrichment, Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, remains a key attraction. Additionally, nature enthusiasts can embark on treks to Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp, with the promise of awe-inspiring mountain views.

With this new route, AirAsia strengthens its presence in South Asia, which now includes destinations such as Jaipur, Bengaluru, and the Maldives. The Kathmandu service is expected to enhance the travel experience by offering both comfort and affordability, according to reports by TTR Weekly.

The scheduled flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flight FD182 will depart Don Mueang Airport at 11:50 a.m., arriving in Kathmandu at 2:00 p.m. The return flight will leave Kathmandu at 3:00 p.m. and land in Bangkok at 7:35 p.m.

It was reported that the addition of this route reflects AirAsia’s strategic efforts to tap into the growing demand for travel between South Asia and Southeast Asia, further solidifying its role as a key player in the regional aviation market.
