Thailand Launches New Portal for Tourism Services and ETA

Date:

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has introduced a new digital platform, “Entry Thailand,” aimed at streamlining the experience for foreign visitors by integrating public and private sector services. Launched as part of the ministry’s broader push to enhance the country’s tourism infrastructure, the web portal is designed to offer an all-in-one solution for travelers, featuring services such as the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system and the upcoming 300-baht tourist fee collection.

According to Mongkon Wimonrat, deputy permanent secretary at the ministry, the platform collaborates with over 12 organizations, including the Ministry of Interior and Airports of Thailand, providing key travel information such as flight and train schedules, event calendars, and local attractions. The portal also links to external services, including accommodation bookings at national parks, Muay Thai classes, tourist police contacts, the VAT refund system, and visa applications.

Mr. Mongkon explained that the platform builds on the digital infrastructure originally developed during the pandemic, when inbound travelers used it to manage quarantine accommodation bookings. Now, it’s aligned with Thailand’s broader public e-service development goals, which aim to improve the nation’s Travel and Tourism Competitive Index ranking. This move is part of the government’s “Ignite Tourism Thailand” policy, designed to rejuvenate the tourism sector.

Looking ahead, the ministry plans to expand the portal’s capabilities, particularly with the integration of the ETA system for visa-exempt travelers and the controversial 300-baht tourism fee, which is still under review. Should another pandemic occur, the platform could also be reactivated for travel screening purposes.

Mr. Mongkon noted that the ministry’s Thailand Travel Safety platform, currently in a trial phase, is ready to facilitate online payments for services and fees. Once the government approves the system, it would take just six months to begin operations, ensuring a smooth transition for both tourists and authorities.

As of mid-September, Thailand has welcomed 24.8 million foreign visitors, led by Chinese tourists, who accounted for 5 million arrivals. The new platform is expected to play a pivotal role in managing the ongoing influx of travelers, providing a seamless experience as the country continues to strengthen its tourism infrastructure.

On September 18, Minister Sorawong Thienthong also met with 20 key tourism operators to discuss strategies and challenges as the sector navigates its ongoing recovery.
