Private Island Koh Kham Listed for 1.8 Billion Baht

Date:

The private island of Koh Kham in Trat Province has been listed for sale at 1.8 billion baht ($53.2 million), sparking significant interest on social media. Local officials have confirmed the sale is legitimate, noting that the island has changed hands several times, likely due to stringent construction regulations in the area.

On October 23, Non Suwatchananon, Chief of Koh Mak Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), confirmed that Koh Kham is a small island known for its fine white sand beaches and clear waters. The legally documented land covers only 10 rai (around 4 acres), and property taxes are paid annually to the Koh Mak SAO. While the island has seen several owners over the years, it is currently owned by the proprietor of “Mum Aroi” restaurant, having been purchased from previous business owners.

Before the current owner, the island belonged to Chakraphan Tawetikul, a former president of the Trat Tourism Business Association, who had bought it from a local resident. Though tourists are allowed to visit, they must pay a landing fee, and the island has minimal development, with only small structures scattered across the mostly forested landscape.

The recent sale announcement described Koh Kham as “one of Thailand’s top 10 most beautiful islands,” frequented by influencers and known for its pristine beaches, clear water, and volcanic rock formations. The island is situated about 35 kilometers from the Laem Ngop coast, just 1 km from Koh Mak, and is accessible by speedboat in around 30-40 minutes. The listing highlights a partially constructed resort, which was halted, with an asking price of 1.8 billion baht.

Dechathon Chan-ob, Chief of Koh Kood SAO, revealed that in August 2024, officials inspected the island due to concerns over potential land and sea encroachment related to the resort’s development. The inspection uncovered unauthorized construction, including a seawall, a pier, and accommodations extending beyond the legal 10-rai boundary. Hillside areas had also been cleared for viewpoints, leading to environmental damage.

Despite these findings, the Trat prosecutor chose not to pursue legal action against the developers, and no appeal was filed by related agencies.
