On 11 November 2024, at Uthayan Cave of Koh Pai Monastery in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Somjet Chanthana, Director of the Conservation Area Management Office 3, and other local officials gathered to strategize the ongoing search for Amphan Klin Niran, a local fisherman who went missing while climbing the rugged Khao Tham Mangkon area. Authorities report that Mr. Amphan had been last seen on November 5 when he set out with his son and nephew to gather items on the mountain. His family has filed a report with the Sam Roi Yot Police after he failed to return.

In the ongoing operation, search teams, totaling over 100 personnel from Khao Sam Roi Yot and nearby national parks, are carefully combing the mountainous terrain where Mr. Amphan’s belongings were located, including flashlights and sacred stone fragments. The challenging search is centered around Tham Mangkon, a steep limestone area known for its hazardous paths, which has necessitated installing radio towers and deploying life-saving equipment. The team faces difficult conditions, with officials prepared to camp overnight on the mountain due to the extensive search routes. A search center for missing persons has also been established at the Phuttha Uthayan Tham Ko Pai Monastery.

The local community has shown strong support, with residents and rescue groups assisting the park staff. Warawut Jirapraphanon, the Sam Roi Yot District Chief, urged all involved to prioritize safety, given the mountainous and cliff-heavy landscape.
Mr. Amphan’s wife, Boonruang Emsamrit, expressed deep concern, noting that her husband has chronic health issues and his age increases their worry. In her search for comfort, she has prayed to “Grandfather Sam Roi Yot,” hoping for her husband’s safe return. She shared that he had planned a mushroom-gathering trip, and she had packed essentials like food, water, and a flashlight for his journey.
While the search continues, hopes remain that Mr. Amphan will be found safely. This case has raised awareness of the risks involved in exploring the area’s steep, natural landscapes, especially for those with health concerns.
