A disturbing trend has emerged in Pattaya, as groups of foreigners, reportedly of Vietnamese descent, have been spotted carrying children and selling flowers to tourists on popular streets like Walking Street, South Pattaya, and Soi Petchtrakul. These groups have been pestering tourists to buy flowers or other products, and some have even resorted to verbal abuse when their offers are declined. Many of these individuals use children, ranging from newborns to seven years old, in an attempt to evoke sympathy from tourists, leading some to either purchase goods or give money without taking the items.
This practice has raised concerns among local businesses and residents, as it not only exploits children but also disrupts the local economy by diverting sales from Thai vendors. Foreigners taking over sales of goods like flowers and candies are seen as competing unfairly for jobs that should be available to locals. The timing of this issue is particularly sensitive, as Pattaya is expecting a large influx of tourists during the Loi Krathong festival and international fireworks display. If left unchecked, these practices could tarnish Pattaya’s reputation as a tourist destination and hinder the local economy.
Authorities are being urged to take action to inspect the situation and address these issues to protect both local businesses and the welfare of the children involved. Without intervention, there’s a fear that the problem will grow and negatively impact Pattaya’s tourism industry.
