A 22-year-old Chinese man, identified as Ryu Chuan-i, was rescued on Sunday night after being trapped for three days in a 12-meter dry water well in a forested area near the Thailand-Myanmar border in Mae Sot district, Tak province.
The incident came to light when a patrol unit passing through the area heard faint cries for help. After calling out, the team confirmed the man’s location and alerted rescue personnel from the Mae Sot Pitakkarn Foundation. Rescuers discovered Ryu at the bottom of an uncovered well approximately 500 meters into the forest.
The rescue operation lasted about 30 minutes, with the man found weak, suffering from a broken left wrist and multiple bruises. Despite his ordeal, rescuers assessed his condition as stable before transferring him to Mae Sot hospital. Through a translator, Ryu recounted his harrowing experience, stating he had been unable to eat or sleep during his time in the well. He expressed deep gratitude for the efforts that saved his life.
Local residents later revealed they had heard cries in the area days earlier but hesitated to investigate due to the location’s isolation and darkness. Authorities are now investigating how the man ended up in the area and have pledged to install a cover over the well to prevent similar accidents.
