Passengers at Koh Samui’s Nathon Pier will soon have relief from the elements, as the installation of new roofs over pedestrian walkways is finally underway. After a year of exposure to rain and harsh sun, the long-awaited repairs are expected to be completed within a week or by the end of the year, according to Narobb Tuaycharoen, a member of the Nakhon Samui municipal council.
The pier, often referred to as the capital of Samui, serves as the main gateway to and from the island, connecting it via ferries and speedboats to mainland Surat Thani province and other destinations. The new roofs will cover the 200-meter-long walkways, enhancing the travel experience for passengers navigating the busy terminal.
The roofing project, managed by the Marine Department, initially began in July 2021 with a budget of 212 million baht. However, the original contractor abandoned the work after removing the old coverings, leaving the structures exposed since December 2023. The reasons for the contractor’s withdrawal remain unclear.
In response, the municipality coordinated with the Marine Department to secure approval for completing the project, ensuring that the walkways will soon be fully functional. The restoration marks a significant improvement for the pier, a key transport hub for the southern resort island.
