Police Officer Killed in Roadblock Crash Involving Migrant Smugglers

Date:

A police officer was killed late Tuesday night in Kamphaeng Phet province’s Mueang district when a pickup truck carrying illegal migrant workers from Myanmar crashed into a parked police car after refusing to stop at a roadblock.

The incident unfolded when two pickup trucks, both transporting illegal migrants, approached a police checkpoint. One of the vehicles ignored signals to stop and collided with the parked police car, where Pol Cpl Natthawat was standing. The impact crushed him against a utility pole, leading to his death.

The second truck also evaded the checkpoint, driving over tire spikes before escaping. Police said the first driver, identified as Songphol, abandoned his vehicle and fled into a nearby sugarcane plantation but was apprehended shortly after.

While hiding, Songphol reportedly called his brother, who was driving the second truck, to pick him up. Police later arrested the brother, another Thai individual, and 19 illegal migrants.

The two drivers admitted they were paid 8,000 baht each to transport the migrants from Tak’s Wang Chao district to a broker in Uthai Thani province.
