Transport Ministry Halts Roadwork for New Year Travel

Date:

The Transport Ministry has announced a nationwide suspension of all road construction projects from December 26 to January 2 to ease traffic congestion during the busy New Year travel period.

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit stated that the suspension is part of measures to accommodate the anticipated surge in interprovincial travel. Additional directives have been issued to the Highways Department to address road safety concerns by repairing potholes, trimming overhanging tree branches, and ensuring proper lighting along major routes.

On Rama 2 Road, a critical link to Thailand’s southern provinces, construction work will be paused starting December 26. Minister Suriya also advised travelers to review their planned routes carefully to minimize delays during their journeys.

To enhance safety and convenience, hundreds of service centers will be established along key highways, offering facilities such as restrooms and vehicle maintenance. Additionally, 37 free camping sites will be made available, providing motorists with an option to rest overnight before resuming their trips, according to Apirat Chaiwongnoi, director-general of the Highways Department.

Traffic enforcement will also be a priority, with highway officials coordinating with local police to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. These efforts aim to reduce congestion and accidents, ensuring a safer travel experience for the public during the holiday season.
