The opposition People’s Party has taken the lead in Thailand’s political race, according to the latest survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) between December 19 and 24, 2023. The poll results place Natthapong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party, as the most favored candidate for prime minister with 29.85% support. This marks a narrow lead over Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the current prime minister and head of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, who received 28.80%.
The survey results also show a significant shift in party preferences. The People’s Party leads overall with 37.30% support, surpassing Pheu Thai’s 27.70%. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga of the United Thai Nation Party gained 10.25% backing, while Bhumjaithai Party’s Anutin Charnvirakul secured 6.45%. Notably, 14.40% of respondents remained undecided, leaving room for potential changes as Thailand approaches the next general election.
Analysts suggest that the People’s Party’s rise reflects growing support among younger voters, particularly for its progressive policies and reform-focused agenda. Natthapong has been vocal about modernizing governance and strengthening economic policies, which seem to resonate with urban and youth demographics. In contrast, Pheu Thai continues to attract support from its traditional rural base and older voters, with Paetongtarn emphasizing stability and continuity in governance.
The survey’s findings highlight Thailand’s shifting political dynamics, setting the stage for a competitive election season. Political observers are closely watching how undecided voters may sway the final outcome, as both major parties adjust their strategies to consolidate support.
