Bangkok Lights Up Yaowarat Road for Chinese New Year

Date:

Bangkok’s iconic Yaowarat Road has been transformed into a luminous spectacle as part of the Chinese New Year Festival 2025, which runs until February 9. The event, organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), celebrates five decades of diplomatic ties between Thailand and China under the theme “Ignite Your Senses, Embrace Our Two Cultures.” Stretching from the Royal Jubilee Gate at Odeon Circle to Chaloem Buri Intersection, the elaborate light displays will shine nightly from 6:00 p.m. to midnight.

The festival officially commenced on January 19 with an opening ceremony at Chinatown’s Royal Jubilee Gate. The street’s festive decor features a blend of red and gold lighting, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Highlights include a striking red arch inspired by a snake motif and floral light installations, which add to the vibrant atmosphere.

Beyond Yaowarat, TAT is extending the celebrations to CentralWorld from January 28 to February 2. The CentralWorld event will showcase illuminated art installations, including a giant snake sculpture and a statue of Guan Yin, as well as miniature depictions of prominent Chinese communities in Thailand. Visitors will also have the opportunity to engage in interactive cultural activities, such as traditional Chinese calligraphy and Khon mask painting.

Food and entertainment take center stage at CentralWorld, with over 30 food stalls offering a variety of culinary delights. The festivities will also feature performances from more than 80 artists, blending contemporary and traditional influences. Popular Thai bands like Tilly Birds, MEAN, and Whal & Dolph will join cultural performers in delivering a diverse program of music and dance.

High-ranking officials from TAT, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, and Bangkok city administrators were present at the launch, underscoring the cultural and diplomatic significance of the event.
