CP Group Declines Maize from Crop-Burning Farms to Combat Haze

Date:

Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, Thailand’s leading agribusiness conglomerate, reaffirmed on Tuesday that it will not purchase maize from farms that engage in crop burning. The policy is part of the company’s efforts to reduce transboundary haze and encourage sustainable farming practices.

Jomkitti Sirikul, senior vice-president of CP Group, reiterated the company’s stance following a meeting with Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat. The discussion focused on addressing the ongoing PM2.5 air pollution, which is partly linked to haze from agricultural fires.

To enforce this policy, CP has deployed satellite technology to identify hot spots in affected regions. Farms found to be practicing crop burning are immediately blacklisted from selling their products to the company. CP, a major buyer of maize for animal feed production, first introduced a traceability system in 2016, which now extends across 230,670 hectares in southern Shan State, Myanmar. The company claims this initiative has helped reduce haze pollution originating from Myanmar and strengthened confidence in the supply chain.

In addition, CP has introduced programs in Thailand’s northern province of Nan, encouraging farmers to transition away from biomass burning. Instead, they are supported in shifting to more sustainable crops, such as coffee, which can generate higher annual incomes. This initiative has recently been expanded to forested areas in other provinces, including Chiang Mai.

The meeting was attended by government officials and industry representatives as part of broader discussions on tackling air pollution and promoting sustainable agriculture.
