British Man Dies After Bangkok Altercation, Two Thai Men Charged

Date:

BANGKOK — Two Thai nightclub security guards have been charged with assault resulting in death after a British man died following a physical altercation in Bangkok. The incident took place in the early hours of March 24, 2025, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

Authorities say the victim, identified only as Nicholas, a 28-year-old British national, was seen running along Pracharat Sai 1 Road near Phibunsongkhram Bridge before attempting to enter the 91 Karaoke venue. He was stopped by a security guard, 29-year-old Boonchu, which led to a verbal exchange. Witnesses reported that Nicholas, appearing agitated, shouted at the guard before leaving the area.

Shortly afterward, another security guard, 32-year-old Phurinat, joined Boonchu in following Nicholas on a motorcycle. When they caught up with him, Phurinat reportedly asked if he needed assistance. Nicholas then jumped onto their motorcycle, prompting Boonchu to push him away. As the situation escalated, Nicholas allegedly attempted to take the motorcycle, leading to a struggle between the three men.

During the altercation, security footage shows Nicholas being restrained, with Phurinat sitting on his waist and Boonchu pressing down on his head. Nicholas lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The two suspects claim they had no intention of harming Nicholas and that a language barrier contributed to the misunderstanding. Investigators confirmed a chokehold was used during the restraint, and the men have been formally charged.

Police are awaiting autopsy results from Phramongkutklao Hospital to confirm the exact cause of death. The British Embassy has been notified, and authorities are working to contact the victim’s family.
