PM defends entertainment complex amid casino criticism

Date:

BANGKOK, April 9, 2025 — Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has defended her government’s proposed entertainment complex project, saying political elements are misrepresenting its objectives. Speaking ahead of the eight-week parliamentary recess, she expressed hope that the break will allow time to better communicate the project’s purpose and address rising public concerns.

The prime minister acknowledged that the government had not sufficiently explained the full scope of the proposal, which has led to growing opposition. She reiterated that casino operations would comprise only a small portion — approximately 10% — of the wider complex, which is envisioned as a multi-purpose facility designed to attract both domestic and international tourists.

Emphasizing the potential economic benefits, Paetongtarn stated that shelving the project would mean a missed opportunity for Thailand, especially at a time when other nations are investing in similar developments to boost tourism and revenue.

Responding to calls from senators for a national referendum on the matter, the prime minister said such a proposal has not yet been discussed within the coalition. She stressed that any movement on the draft legislation will depend on parliamentary debate and broader consensus.

The proposal remains under review and has not been withdrawn. Government officials maintain that any potential casino component would be subject to strict regulation and confined to specific zones, without impacting national gambling laws.

Opposition from the Prachachart party, citing concerns about conflicts with Islamic principles, has prompted the prime minister to call for further dialogue with coalition partners.

At a recent meeting with ministry permanent secretaries, held at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Paetongtarn urged agencies to better inform the public that the initiative is not intended to promote gambling. Rather, she said, it is aimed at increasing national income and enhancing the country’s capacity to host international events.
