Ad Carabao Opposes Thai Casino Plan

Date:

Thai rock icon Yuenyong Opakul, better known as Ad Carabao, voiced strong opposition on May 27 to the government’s proposed casino-entertainment project, warning of its potential social costs and questioning the wisdom of legalising gambling in Thailand.

In a Facebook post, Ad Carabao criticised the legalisation of both casinos and online gambling, arguing that the supposed economic benefits are outweighed by the negative consequences for society. He expressed concern that such developments may ultimately harm more than help, stating that while some might profit, the broader impact on Thai communities could be severe.

The government’s proposal seeks to legitimise and regulate gambling venues as a strategy to attract investment and boost state revenue. However, widespread public concern has led lawmakers to postpone deliberation of the bill until the next parliamentary session, set to begin on July 2.

Further criticism has emerged from the academic and financial sectors. Associate Professor Chittawan Chanagul from Kasetsart University questioned Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat’s meetings with potential casino investors, noting that these discussions occurred before parliamentary approval of the legislation.

Bank of Thailand Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput also raised caution, describing the project as operating in a legal “grey area” that could damage Thailand’s global image. He suggested prioritising transparent and well-regulated economic ventures instead.

In response, Deputy Minister Julapun cited international models such as Singapore and the United States, where casino industries operate within legal frameworks and contribute to the economy. Yet, Chittawan countered this argument by pointing out the risk of criminal activity and money laundering within the sector, referencing past incidents in Las Vegas as examples.

Adding to the complexity, Thailand’s ranking on the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International remains significantly lower than those of countries being used as models. Chittawan warned that this disparity presents serious obstacles to implementing effective oversight.

Ad Carabao’s remarks add a prominent cultural voice to the growing resistance against the policy. His statement also briefly referenced political matters, including the hospital stay of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, though his primary focus remained on the risks associated with gambling legalisation.
