Myanmar Worker Killed in Soil Collapse at Bangkok Expressway Construction Site

Date:

A 39-year-old construction worker from Myanmar died Sunday morning after being buried under collapsing soil and a concrete slab at a construction site on Rama II Road in Chom Thong district.

The fatal accident occurred near Sombunwit School in the Bang Mod subdistrict at approximately 7:30 a.m., within a closed section of the elevated expressway construction zone. Rescue teams responded swiftly after police were alerted to a worker trapped in a three-meter-deep trench.

The victim, identified as Mr. Mew, was found face-down, partially submerged in muddy water with a heavy concrete slab pinning him down. Despite efforts by rescue personnel to drain the trench and revive him, he was later pronounced dead at Bangpakok 9 Hospital.

Co-workers said the collapse happened while they were installing drainage pipes beneath the under-construction Rama III–Dao Khanong–Western Outer Ring Road expressway, a project managed by the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT). Mr. Mew had been working at the bottom of the trench when the ground suddenly gave way.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the collapse, interviewing witnesses and the site supervisor. Safety concerns have been raised over conditions at the major infrastructure project, which aims to link key routes in western Bangkok with the M82 intercity motorway.
