Groundwater symposium kicks off

Date:

Thailand is hosting its first international groundwater symposium, with the Department of Groundwater Resources as the organizer. This event is intended to help improve the quality and efficiency of groundwater extraction, through advanced technology and know-how.

The first Thailand International Groundwater Symposium kicked off today in Bangkok, under the theme Key to Water Security and Sustainability. This international meeting is aimed at promoting the exchange of know-how, experiences, research, innovations, and technologies on groundwater issues, and highlighting the importance of groundwater resources at the international level.

Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said the technology Thailand possesses enables it to dig up groundwater as deep as 1,000 meters, which has helped farmers in many areas.

Despite its benefits of being a high-capacity water source, groundwater should be protected and conserved so that it does not run out, according to Minister Varawut.

Thailand International Groundwater Symposium is taking place in Bangkok from now to 24 August. It will be followed by a field trip to Kanchanaburi where symposium participants will get to observe groundwater sources in the province.
